The world changed 50 years ago when Frank McNamara created the first multi-use charge card - the Diners Club Card. In 1950, a world without cash was inconceivable. Today, an economic universe without plastic is just as inconceivable. From Sydney to Bangkok, for business or leisure, the phrase "charge it" is a now universal occurrence, playing a key role in how you pay for goods and services.

People soon grasped the "charge it" concept and began using the Diners Club Card. Service Establishments realised it was good business to offer people an alternative form of payment. By 2006, the Card was accepted at over 13 million businesses that appreciated the buying power of the individuals who carried and used the Diners Club Card as a payment tool.

In 1956 Diners Club Australia was established as an independent franchise of Diners Club International, thereby making Diners Club Australia the most experienced card organisation in the country.

In 1999 Citigroup became the sole shareholder and owner of Diners Club Australia thereby increasing Citigroup’s existing Diners Club interests which include ownership of the worldwide franchisor, Diners Club International and a number of national franchises around the world.
